With Chinese New Year approaching, the Asian Students Society (aka A.S.S.) plan an event to beat out their rivals, the Chinese American Union Coalition (aka C.A.U.C). The goal
RED BEAN was created as part of the 72 Hour Film Shootout from Film Lab.
The co-writer, Mahan Malhotra, and I wanted to explore the nuances of the Asian identity through a comedic vessel.
the process
We centred the piece around two very different types of Asian characters–a Timothee Chalamet loving sorority girl and a type A stressball.
Directing the project, it was a pleasure to explore mockumentary style camera work to enhance the comedy.
the result
After completing RED BEAN, Mahan and I felt so strongly about the project that we expanded it into a full TV pilot episode, naming it A.S.S. (or the Asian Students Society).
